In the past you could only count on a small number of fonts when building a web site: Arial, Times Roman, Comic Sans, Courier New and Verdana. This led to a lot of web sites that used the very ugly Comic Sans just so the site would look "different."
The ability to load additional fonts has been around for quite a while, but early browsers where inconsistent in how they accomplished this. As a result, web developers rarely used this feature and would resort to creating web sites made entirely with pictures of text.
Today, all major browsers support loadable web fonts. There are a large number of free fonts available.
